The Story
Café Schober in Zurich's Niederdorf quarter is one of Switzerland's most beautiful historic cafés — multiple rooms across three floors of a historic building, each with a different character, all sharing the same quality of hot chocolate and pastries that has made this café a Zurich institution since 1842.
The hot chocolate is the reason to come. Not a cup of cocoa — a proper drinking chocolate, thick and serious, made with the precision that the Swiss apply to everything sweet.
Signature Items

House hot chocolate
Thick, dark, serious — the benchmark Swiss drinking chocolate. Not to be diluted with milk from a machine.

Cake of the day
Changes with the season — always house-made, always Swiss in character.
The Feeling
Feels like
A Zurich afternoon in 1920 — ornate rooms, thick hot chocolate, no reason to hurry.
Best time
3–5pm — between the lunch rush and the dinner crowd
Music
Quiet conversation and the sound of porcelain.
Perfect for
The CinCin Notes
Café Schober is one of the last places in Switzerland where you can sit in a room that looks exactly as it should — historic, well-maintained, not a theme park version of itself.
Order the hot chocolate. Take your time. This is what a proper European café is for.
