The lake that set the standard for beauty.
Lake Como has been on every list for two centuries. Pliny the Younger had two villas here. The Romantics wrote about the light. Stendhal said it was the most beautiful place he had ever seen.
None of this has really changed. The lake is still the same shape — a dramatic Y cut into the foothills of the Alps, deep and cold and perfectly framed by mountains that hold the light differently at every hour. The villas are still there. The ferries still run between the villages.
What changes is the way you arrive at it. Lake Como rewards the slow approach: arriving by ferry rather than car, staying in one place rather than rushing between them, sitting on a terrace in the late afternoon and letting the landscape do its work.

We've thought about whether Lake Como needs introduction. It doesn't — everyone knows what it looks like. What gets lost in the image is the experience of actually being there. The light changes every hour. The sound of a boat crossing in the morning. The way the mountains hold the heat in the evening. These are things that don't photograph.
