Palás is Piedmontese for palace. It is what the Michele Chiarlo winery calls its hotel, set among its own Barolo vines.
In 1988 Michele Chiarlo bought vines in Cerequio, one of the best-known vineyards between La Morra and Barolo. In 2011 the family opened a relais here, with a restaurant and a wine cellar, in an 18th-century manor house and its old barn. Michele’s sons Stefano and Alberto now run the winery, and in 2024 they added a lounge and the Sky Bar above the vines.

A house that looks out on the vines
The restoration was led by the Rimini designer Mariano Mulazzani. In the winery’s magazine he explains: “The main and most ancient part of the structure has been recovered according to a Piedmontese-Baroque style. The most recent area, which we recovered from the barn, allowed us to be more experimental.” The buildings kept their original size, and large windows bring the vineyards indoors. Wood, glass and iron were salvaged from the old structure, and the render on the façades was left unpainted.
Display cases hold soil from the vineyards, next to paintings by Giancarlo Ferraris, who designed the winery’s best-known labels. In the newer suites, old wooden vine posts from the vineyards have been worked into the rooms.

Nine vineyards, eleven suites
Each suite is named after a Barolo vineyard and keeps bottles from it in a niche in the wall. The four suites in the manor house are furnished in Baroque style; from Cerequio, on the first floor, you step out onto the old balcony and look across to Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga. The seven in the former barn are plain, with Luserna stone, oak and large windows onto the vines. Cerequio and Cannubi appear twice: the two Riserva suites are the newest, each with its own entrance and a balcony over the Barolo valley.
Almost every suite has its own wellness area with a steam room or a Jacuzzi. Families can take one of the duplexes, Arborina, Ginestra or Brunate, or Vigna Rionda, each with a sofa bed for two; Arborina is the only one with a second bathroom. The Rocche junior suite, on the ground floor, is suitable for guests with disabilities.

Barolo on the doorstep
Cerequio is an amphitheatre of vines, sheltered from the wind, and locals call it the “Riviera of the Langhe”. The winery farms six hectares of Nebbiolo here. Sommelier Roberto Stroppiana takes guests through the vineyard and then into the Caveau, the 18th-century vaulted cellar, for a tasting: more than 6,000 bottles, with vintages going back to 1958. Anything in the cellar can be bought on the spot or shipped home.

At the table
Vincenzo La Corte cooks at La Corte Restaurant. He grew up in the Langhe; his parents are from Sicily. There is a menu of Langhe classics such as vitello tonnato and plin, a fish menu and, in truffle season, dishes with white truffle.
The Sky Bar above the vines also serves lunch and dinner. For an apericru, you pick a bottle from the cellar with the sommelier, and the kitchen sends out Piedmontese tapas to go with it, on the terrace or by the pool.
“Basic, simple, sober, and moderate. I focus on three ingredients: meat, fish, side dish.”
Vincenzo La Corte

Who Palás is for
Palás suits two or three quiet nights in the Langhe, for couples and small families who like to eat and drink well. You don’t need to know your Barolo: the pool, the Sky Bar and suites with their own wellness areas make a stay worthwhile even without a tasting. If wine means nothing to you at all, though, you will only get half of what the place offers.
La Morra and Barolo are each just under two kilometres away, about half an hour on foot, uphill to La Morra. The hotel offers a shuttle service and four e-bikes, and Vespa hire through outside providers. For trips further into the Langhe, a car makes life easier. The house is at its best in the warmer months, when you can sit outside; autumn adds the harvest and truffle season. It closes in winter, and the restaurant is closed on Mondays, when dinner is at the Sky Bar.
