Oualidia or Essaouira: which town suits your Morocco trip?
A sheltered lagoon or a lively port town? We compare Oualidia and Essaouira for swimming, surfing, food, getting around and when to go.
In Oualidia you take a boat out to the oyster beds and stay on at the lagoon for a swim. In Essaouira you walk from the fishing harbour through the medina and sooner or later end up on the windy beach. The two towns are a good three hours' drive apart – and offer two very different kinds of holiday.
Which one suits you depends mostly on how you want to spend your days: by the water at a slower pace, or walking round a town, eating out and getting on a board. For everything there is to do in Oualidia itself, see our Oualidia travel tips.
| What matters to you | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Swimming in a more sheltered lagoon | Oualidia |
| Medina, harbour and restaurants on foot | Essaouira |
| Kitesurfing as the main focus | Essaouira |
| Oysters and trips out on the lagoon | Oualidia |
| Getting there without a hire car | Essaouira |
- Choose Oualidia for time on the lagoon and a slower pace.
- Choose Essaouira for a walkable town, restaurants and water sports.

Which is better for swimming and water sports?
For swimming, Oualidia's main advantage is its sheltered lagoon. A sandbar keeps the open Atlantic out, the village beach has fine sand and shallow water, and since 2026 the Grande Plage has flown the Blue Flag. The tides change how deep the water is and where it's easy to get in. At high tide the swell rolls into the lagoon and breaks as one soft wave at a time, which makes it a good place to learn to surf; a surf school picks up La Sultana's guests from the hotel jetty.
Essaouira's beach is a wide bay right in front of the medina, and it has a Blue Flag too. Here the wind sets the rhythm of the day. The trade wind, known locally as the Alizé, is steadiest from April to October and blows almost every day in July. Mornings are often calmer, and the wind usually picks up around midday. So swim early; as the wind builds, the bay belongs to the kitesurfers. The kite schools teach beginners in the bay, while confident riders head for the more exposed beach at Sidi Kaouki, 25 km to the south. From November to March the wind is less reliable, and it's more of a season for surfers.
When to go: which season suits which town?
Essaouira stays cool even at the height of summer. At the town's weather station, average daytime highs for 1961–1990 were 21 to 22°C in July and August and 18°C in January (figures from Germany's national weather service, the DWD). Most of the rain falls between November and January, and there is hardly any from June to September.
The Gnaoua and World Music Festival brings concerts to Essaouira in late June. It celebrates Gnaoua music, whose roots go back to people taken from sub-Saharan Africa and enslaved in the region in the 16th century. If you're going for the festival, book your room early.
In Oualidia, July and August are high season, as they are Morocco's main holiday months. June and September are quieter but still warm. In winter the surf is at its strongest and migrating birds stop off on the lagoon; for how the months compare, see our Oualidia travel tips.

Where to eat: oysters in Oualidia, fish in Essaouira
Oualidia is known for its oysters, which have been farmed in the lagoon since the 1950s. Three places to eat:
- La Table de La Plage at La Sultana serves lunch: sea bass baked in a salt crust, lobster, oysters and bouillabaisse, with vegetables from the hotel's garden. The restaurant's outdoor setup depends on the weather. Non-residents should book well ahead.
- Octopus is more casual, with a terrace looking out over the whole lagoon: grilled octopus, oysters gratinéed with salmon, mussels. Book by phone.
- Ostréa belongs to oyster farm No. 7, so the oysters and seafood come straight from the lagoon.
For seafood in Essaouira, start at the harbour. The fishermen land the night's catch, and you can try it at the fish market next door. Three places for fish, one of them on the beach:
- The Fish Bar at the Le Palazzo hotel in the kasbah quarter serves only fish and seafood and is open for dinner only; book ahead.
- La Table Madada on Rue Youssef el Fassi mixes Moroccan cooking with French classics and Mediterranean flavours. Chef Souad cooks with the seasons and with whatever the fishermen bring in.
- Océan Vagabond sits right on the beach and has been both a restaurant and a water-sports club since 1995. Just the place for lunch by the sea and an afternoon on the water.

What to do in and around each town
From Oualidia, you head out on the water or along the coast. La Sultana takes guests out to the oyster beds in traditional fishing boats; back at the jetty, the O Bar serves half a dozen oysters each and a glass of wine. An hour to the south is Safi, a port town with a medina and a long tradition of pottery, which the hotel offers as a day trip. To the north is El Jadida, with the Portuguese fortified city of Mazagan; our Oualidia travel tips suggest how to spend a day there.
In Essaouira, most things are within walking distance. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, was laid out as a fortified royal port by Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah in the 18th century. From the ramparts you look across to the Purple Islands, a nature reserve where falcons and gulls circle overhead. The Sqala du Port, the bastion at the harbour, looks over the quay and dry dock on one side and out to the islands on the other. Experienced kitesurfers can also consider Sidi Kaouki, farther south.
Getting there from Marrakech and Casablanca
Oualidia is easiest to reach by car; Essaouira also works well by bus. Journey times at a glance:
- Marrakech to Oualidia: about three hours from Marrakech airport.
- Casablanca to Oualidia: about two and a half hours from Casablanca airport.
- Marrakech to Essaouira: 175 km; Supratours and CTM buses take two and a half to three hours.
- Casablanca to Essaouira: 350 km. Without a car, take the train to Marrakech, just over three hours, then continue by bus.
- Oualidia to Essaouira: via Safi. At around three hours each way, we'd make this a change of base rather than a day trip.
To see both, split your stay between the two towns and hire a car for the coastal drive: fly into Marrakech, spend a few days in Essaouira, then drive up the coast to Oualidia and on to Casablanca for your flight home.

Where to stay: La Sultana in Oualidia, the medina in Essaouira
La Sultana Oualidia sits on the edge of the lagoon in a nature reserve and has twelve rooms and suites, each with its own terrace and hot tub. Surf lessons and boat trips leave from the hotel's own jetty, and the hotel arranges kayak and birdwatching trips and horse rides on the beach. Dinner at La Table de La Sultana is for hotel guests only. There's more in our portrait of La Sultana Oualidia.
We don't have a hotel in Essaouira in our selection yet. If you want to walk everywhere, look for somewhere to stay inside the medina or just by its walls; from there the harbour, restaurants and beach are all a short walk away.
