Our Mallorca selection starts in two places: Artà in the northeast and Santanyí in the southeast. Stay in the centre of Santanyí at Can Ferrereta, or outside Artà at Es Racó d’Artà, among woodland and gardens.
Es Racó d’Artà stands on an old estate at the edge of the Llevant Natural Park: hills, Mediterranean scrub and a largely undeveloped coastline. A trail runs from the hotel through the park to Cala Torta. Closer to town are the prehistoric walled settlement of Ses Païsses and the sanctuary of Sant Salvador on the hill above Artà; the Ermita de Betlem is about 10 km away. On Tuesdays there is a market in Artà. The hotel is open from February to November.
Can Ferrereta is a 17th-century mansion in Santanyí’s old town. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the market fills the Plaça Major a few steps away. The coves of Mondragó Natural Park and Cala Llombards are a short drive, and the beach and salt flats of Es Trenc lie to the west, towards Ses Salines.
Artà and Santanyí are about 50 minutes apart by car. Four or five days suit one area; with a week and a change of hotel you can see both. You will want a car either way, as the coves and trailheads lie outside the towns. Palma is close to the airport and fits well at the start or end of a trip.
