The street is named after the house, not the other way round.

The 17th-century mansion belonged to the Bonets, an old Santanyí family known in town as “los Ferrereta”. The nickname passed to the house, and from the house to the lane outside. It stands beside the walls Santanyí once built against pirate raids, and the Norfolk pine in its courtyard, together with the nearby bell tower, is part of the town’s best-known views.

Later the house stood empty and fell into disrepair. The town council tried to buy it but balked at the price. The Soldevila Ferrer family, who also run Hotel Sant Francesc in Palma, restored it with the Mallorcan practice Bastidas Architecture and added two new buildings. The vaults, stone arches and timber beams survived, as did the local sandstone that Santanyí reserved for its finer houses. A replica of a shepherd’s hut was added in the garden.

01

A six-metre-high ceiling

No two of the 32 rooms and suites are the same: some keep the arches and vaults of the old house, others are in the new buildings. The Duplex Suite used to be the hayloft, or so a 96-year-old local woman told the owner. Today its ceiling rises to six metres, a staircase built for the space leads from the sitting room up to the bedroom, and the bathroom sits beneath a 17th-century stone arch. The Can Ferrereta Suite looks through French balconies onto the courtyard and the church.

Only the Pool Suite has a pool of its own: four metres by two, heated, and modelled on the safareigs where islanders once did their washing. Each Terrace Suite comes with a private garden, sun loungers and an outdoor shower. The smallest room is called Nest: 27 square metres on the ground floor, which the hotel describes as cool and quiet.

02

Sand from Africa

Ocre takes its name from the ochre façades of Santanyí. The hotel traces their colour to the southern wind, which carries sand over from North Africa. The restaurant occupies the former wine cellar, under timber beams and old stone arches; one of them still carries graffiti from the 17th century.

Àlvar Albaladejo and Tamara Lumbreras cook Mediterranean food with seasonal produce from island suppliers. On Saturdays, when the market fills the Plaça Major, there is a set lunch built around what was bought there. In summer, tables are laid in the Mallorcan courtyard.

03

A pool the colour of a farm reservoir

The large garden pool is dark green on purpose, a nod to the water reservoirs of the Mallorcan countryside. Cypresses, olive trees, jasmine and bougainvillea grow around it, and beneath the olives a two-metre head by Jaume Plensa gazes across the water. Next to the pool is La Fresca, named after the Mallorcan expression “prendre la fresca”, cooling off on a hot day. At lunchtime it serves hotel guests only.

The second pool is indoors, in the Sa Calma spa: ten metres long and heated, with a hammam and sauna beside it. For treatments the team uses salt from the Es Trenc salt flats, seaweed, and olive and almond oils.

04

Art from the family collection

The Soldevila Ferrer family chose the art specifically for the house. There are works by Joan Miró, Guillem Nadal and Jordi Alcaraz, and photographs by Bárbara Vidal showing the house while it still stood empty. Furniture by Piero Lissoni and Hans J. Wegner shares the rooms with pieces made for the hotel by island craftspeople.

In the library, a large window faces the courtyard, with books and records from the hotel’s collection. Many of the books are Assouline titles, some in limited editions.

Our tip nearby

Santanyí market

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, more than 150 stalls fill the Plaça Major and the lanes around it, all year except on public holidays, from 9 am to 2 pm. Most of the fruit and vegetables are grown by local farmers, and there are ceramics, textiles and leather goods too. The hotel is only a few steps away. Go on a Saturday and some of the morning’s shopping turns up again in Ocre’s market lunch.

A quieter Mallorca: Artà or Santanyí?

East of the Serres de Llevant, sheep graze between holm oaks and the coves at the end of the road have no hotels. Further south, Santanyí's market fills the square twice a week, and Mondragó Natural Park is a short drive away. Here is how the two areas differ, where to walk and swim, and when the coast gets busy.
