Hotel rooms with a view: which category to book

From the bed, the balcony or only the terrace? Which room to book for the view at WHITE, Santa Bárbara, La Sultana, Olinto and The Rooster.

In the hotel photo, the sea is right there at the foot of the bed. When you come to book, the category is simply called “Suite”. If the view is why you’re going, look more closely: can you see it from the room itself, only from the terrace, or is it partly hidden by buildings and trees?

Here are five hotels from our Instagram series “Rooms with a view”. We’ve checked the hotels’ room descriptions to see which categories offer sea, lagoon or mountain views—and where it’s worth asking for more detail.

WHITE: sea views throughout, balconies on the first floor

WHITE sits on São Miguel’s south coast near Lagoa, a dozen metres from the sea and facing south. All accommodation at WHITE is described as having sea views. Where you see the sea from depends on the floor.

The Junior Suites and Unique Suites are on the ground floor; the Junior Suites open straight onto the patio. The Ocean Suites are on the first floor, all with suspended balconies and windows facing the sea. They’re the only suites described with sea views from both the room and the balcony. For a sea-facing balcony, choose an Ocean Suite.

Families stay off-site at Casa da Rocha, a three-bedroom villa facing the sea; the hotel itself takes guests aged 14 and over.

Santa Bárbara: sea and mountains, or the garden?

Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort near Ribeira Grande stands right above Praia de Santa Bárbara. You stay in studios and villas, each with its own deck. No category here promises a full sea view. The Garden villas look onto the garden; in Blue & Green and Retreat, the sea is a slice of the view beside the mountains, not the whole picture.

Both categories list partial sea and mountain views, but the outlook varies with the studio or villa. They differ in their pool facilities: the Retreat Studio has a private hot tub on the deck, while the Blue & Green Studio shares the saltwater pool. Both categories include one- and two-bedroom villas. To see how much sea you’ll get from the bed, ask for photographs from the studio or villa you’ll actually book.

La Sultana Oualidia: which suites look over the lagoon?

La Sultana Oualidia has twelve rooms and suites on the lagoon at Oualidia, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Each has its own terrace; what you see from it depends on the category. The Panorama Room and Panorama Suite look out over the garden and the countryside. The Lagoon Suite looks over the lagoon’s nature reserve, and the Treehouse Suite, set in a tree, has panoramic views of the lagoon.

Choose a Lagoon Suite for views over the lagoon. The top-floor Ocean Suite also lists an ocean view; if that’s the reason for your stay, confirm where it’s visible from before booking. The Lagoon Suite is also the only one of these that sleeps two adults and two children.

Olinto: garden or pool pavilion?

Olinto lies in the High Atlas, about an hour’s drive from Marrakech: nine free-standing pavilions set in gardens, each for two adults. Both pavilion types are described with garden views and sunsets behind the Atlas.

The pool pavilions add a private pool and more living space, but the hotel doesn’t say the mountain view is any better. If you’re booking for the view, ask where your pavilion stands.

The Rooster: which house looks out to sea?

The Rooster has no rooms, only houses on Livadia Bay on Antiparos, each with its own pool. Each of the eight house types is labelled with its view, and two are labelled sea view. Love Shack, for up to three guests, overlooks the Aegean, with sunset views. Haven of Tranquility is the sea-view house for up to five.

Bush & Hill has a partial sea view: the houses sit among evergreens on the hillside, with glimpses of the sea. Most of the others, including Wilderness Valley near the beach, are labelled landscape view. The Farmhouse in Kambos, 1.5 km from the hotel, looks out from shady terraces over fields and the vegetable garden. Book it for the farm, not the sea.

Before you book: what to ask the hotel

The category tells you what kind of view to expect. Ask for photographs showing the outlook from the room you’ll actually book. Two questions worth adding to any enquiry:

  • “Could you send me photos of the view from the available room, house or pavilion, both from inside and from the terrace?”
  • “Is this view included in the category I’m booking?”

The Rooster is open from early May to early October; check the exact dates for your trip with the hotel before booking.
