No road leads to vigilius above Lana, only the cable car up to the car-free Vigiljoch. At around 1,500 metres stands a building made of larch wood, glass, natural stone and clay.
Owner Ulrich Ladurner and architect Matteo Thun conceived the building around the motto “Eco, not ego”, and the forest starts right outside the door. Evenings follow the cable-car timetable, but hotel guests have extra runs until 11 pm, and later ones can be arranged for a fee.
Where you sleep
There are 35 rooms and six suites. Superior rooms open onto the garden, Deluxe rooms have a balcony, and the suites have one or the other. Depending on their position, rooms face the Dolomites and get the morning sun, or face the forest and get the evening sun.
Large windows, a bathtub and a separate shower come with every category. In the Superior rooms the bathroom is open; in the Deluxe rooms a natural clay wall separates the bathroom from the sleeping area. The suites have their own living area with South Tyrolean farmhouse furniture.

At the table
Under Daniel Sanin, Restaurant 1500 cooks regionally and with the seasons, with views over Lana and the valley. In the evening the menu changes daily; non-residents by reservation only. Breakfast is served here too.
Stube Ida is the place for South Tyrolean cooking. Its tiled stove, around a hundred years old, once heated the old mountain hotel; during the day it serves food and has a sun terrace.

In between
The Aquiléia Spa covers 1,200 square metres: a 14-metre pool, an indoor and outdoor whirlpool, plus a sauna, steam room and an adults-only relaxation room. Day guests aged 12 and over can book a day spa.
Trails lead in every direction from the Vigiljoch; the cable-car operator counts more than 100 kilometres of them. An old single chairlift runs to near the little church of St. Vigil. The hotel offers guided hikes, mountain bikes and yoga; in winter it provides snowshoes.

Siblings Sonja and David Klotz grew up on a farm in Pawigl and, after years in restaurant kitchens abroad, now cook back on their home mountain: South Tyrolean recipes built on local produce, with the odd idea from further afield. The Platter family, now in its fourth generation, runs this inn on the shore of the Schwarze Lacke, a small pond on the car-free Vigiljoch. Roswitha cooks hearty South Tyrolean food such as goulash with dumplings and Kaiserschmarrn, served in the old spruce-panelled dining room or on the terrace by the water.

Othmar Raich runs the restaurant at Kränzelhof, an estate with seven art gardens and an organic winery. The kitchen follows the seasons, herbs and rare vegetables come from the restaurant's own garden, and the wine list puts rare bottles next to the estate's own.
