vigilius mountain resort
A hotel you have to consciously earn. No road, no quick check-in — instead a cable car that slowly rises through the forest. Once at the top, something shifts: the sounds disappear, the view opens, and the vigilius sits quietly on the slope — as if it had always been there.

Our take
Why we love it
Accessible only by cable car — the journey is already part of the experience.
Architecture by Matteo Thun: horizontal along the slope, glass to the valley, silence to the mountain.
Car-free, silent, without distraction — genuine slowness, not a marketing promise.
Italy's first KlimaHaus Class A hotel, heated with biomass from the surrounding farms.
Silence at 1,500 m in the morning — Merano, palm trees and Mediterranean life in the afternoon.

Eco, not Ego
Architecture that defers to the mountain.
Designed around the principle “Eco, not Ego”, the vigilius merges into its surroundings rather than dominating them. The vision of South Tyrolean entrepreneur Ulrich Ladurner and architect Matteo Thun lays the building horizontally along the slope — glass facing the valley, calm facing the mountain.

The Hosts
The vigilius is the realisation of a childhood dream. South Tyrolean entrepreneur Ulrich Ladurner grew up looking at the Vigiljoch and imagined a place where nature and self-discovery could merge. Together with architect Matteo Thun he built it around a single principle — “Eco, not Ego” — a house that defers to the mountain rather than dominating it. Today the resort is led by Ingrid Ladurner and her team, guided by responsibility and tradition. Interior architect Christina Biasi-von Berg shaped its quiet, tactile character. It remains family-run, and consistently built around one idea: that hospitality does not have to be loud.

Lana, South Tyrol
Pawigl 43, 39011 Lana, South Tyrol, Italy
The vigilius sits on the Vigiljoch, a car-free plateau above Lana at around 1,500 metres. No roads, no traffic, no through-route — only forest, trails and alpine meadows. Down in the valley: Merano, with its Mediterranean climate, palm trees, promenades and thermal baths — a rare blend of Alps and south.
